Introducing Vetnomics online training in genomics for vets

Recent advances in genomics are already having an impact on animal breeding and medical treatment. To help vets get up to speed on the latest developments Agrimetrics has been working with a team at SRUC to deliver Vetnomics, an online training course specifically tailored for their needs.

Recent advances in genomics are already having an impact on animal breeding and medical treatment. To help vets get up to speed on the latest developments Agrimetrics has been working with a team at SRUC to deliver Vetnomics, an online training course specifically tailored for their needs.

Project lead, Professor Mike Coffey of SRUC says: “The surge in applications for genomics in the industry and the speed at which that has occurred has left many practicing vets bereft of sufficient knowledge to advise their farmer clients.

“This course will provide the knowledge required for vets to be able to offer impartial and useful advice to farmers on how genomics works and how they should use it.”

The Vetnomics course aims to guide trained vets through a series of 17 online lectures.

To include:

• Refresher in basic genetics
• Latest developments in genotyping and sequencing
• Importance of phenotyping
• Best assessment and management of animals based on their genetic merit.

Through a interdisciplinary approach the course aims to share important messages from animal genetics research, give confidence in emerging technologies and refresh and inform vets as to the underlying mechanisms of genomics to enable discussion with farmers.

Calves at Crichton Royal Farm SRUC Dairy Research Centre

This course will provide an opportunity for the acquisition of CPD (Continued personal development) points.

Vets need to undertake a minimum of 105 hours of CPD in any three-year period with an average of 35 hours per year. We estimate that this course will be equivalent to 18 hours.

Alongside being available online there will also be the option to take this course over a three day residency in Edinburgh; more details will be available soon.
