Semantic Web/ Linked Data Scientist at Agrimetrics

Job Description:
We are looking to appoint a Semantic Web/Linked Data Scientist to work with our multi-disciplinary team in designing data integration technologies and implementing these into the platform that underpins Agrimetrics' 'data-as-a-service' offering for the agri-food sector.

As part of a fast-paced, expanding enterprise the successful candidate would also need to be comfortable working collaboratively with our wider team (comprising data scientists, senior software engineers, semantic web technologist, ontologists and other subject matter experts), working flexibly across a range of technologies beyond those dedicated to the delivery of a semantic data store.

He/she will have excellent communication, time-management and organisational skills and will be comfortable working independently using his/her own initiative. He/she would also be expected to adopt approaches that are suited to a commercial setting.

This role will be based at our office on the University of Reading campus.
Key Responsibilities:
  • To systematically apply ontology-driven knowledge representation, linked-data-oriented data integration and intelligence analysis techniques to the big data ecosystem emerging from the agri-food sector.
Essential skills & experience:
  • 2 years + of practical experience in building interdisciplinary and commercial applications using ontology engineering and linked data principles.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Semantic Web and Linked Data technology stack including W3C standards such as RDF(S) 1.1, OWL 2 and SPARQL 1.1.
  • Expertise in developing upper level and domain-specific ontologies.
  • Practical experience in persisting and materialising data in Triple/Quad stores such as GraphDB.
  • Some experience in applying description logic based reasoning techniques.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented software engineering principles using TDD.
  • Practical software development and deployment experience in one or more of Java, Python and Javascript using TDD.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of version control frameworks such as Git
Desirable skills & experience:
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or similar academic discipline.
  • Knowledge of: text mining and machine learning methods; natural language processing, information retrieval, and data mining; continuous integration approaches using e.g. Jenkins; the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana).
  • Experience with cloud computing infrastructures.
